Abstract

This study examines cohesion and coherence in the narrative discourse of Kakawin Arjunawiwāha by Mpu Kanwa. The text was selected because of its well-structured narrative, consistent characterization, and strong religious and heroic values. Kakawin Arjunawiwāha recounts Arjuna's ascetic meditation on Mount Indrakila to obtain spiritual power for upholding dharma and assisting the gods in defeating the demon Niwatakawaca. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using theories of cohesion and coherence as the analytical framework. The data source is Kakawin Arjunawiwāha based on the edited text and English translation by Stuart Robson. The data consist of narrative passages that demonstrate relationships between sentences, ideas, and events. The analysis focuses on grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion, and thematic, chronological, and causal coherence. The findings reveal that cohesion is established through referential ties among characters, collocations of religious terms such as tapa, brata, and yoga, and lexical relations that reinforce thematic unity. Coherence is achieved through a logical sequence of events, causal relationships between actions and their consequences, and thematic consistency concerning the pursuit of spiritual power to uphold righteousness. These features make Kakawin Arjunawiwāha a cohesive and coherent narrative that effectively conveys its moral and religious values.
