Immersion Bootcamp: Treating the Root Causes of TOEFL Reading Comprehension Challenges

Abstract

Sertifikat prediksi TOEFL merupakan salah satu persyaratan yang harus diserahkan oleh setiap mahasiswa di UIN KH Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan sebelum proyek akhir atau sidang tesis mereka. Data awal dari unit bahasa kami menunjukkan bahwa, dari 598 peserta tes pada tahun 2023, 57% gagal pada percobaan pertama, sementara 34% harus mengulanginya bahkan setelah percobaan kedua. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang membuat mahasiswa universitas kami kesulitan mencapai nilai lulus TOEFL, khususnya pada bagian membaca, dan mengatasi tantangan ini melalui program yang disebut Immersion Bootcamp. Ini adalah penelitian tindakan partisipatif. Selama program, mahasiswa diberikan berbagai kegiatan mulai dari menonton film hingga membaca cerita pendek dan menyanyikan lagu-lagu berbahasa Inggris. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa 24 dari 41 peserta mengalami peningkatan nilai membaca TOEFL setelah mengikuti Immersion Bootcamp. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa Immersion Bootcamp sangat efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman bacaan mahasiswa.
