Analisis Tradisi Pemberian Nama (Famatörö Töi) Anak Pertama Bagi Masyarakat Nias di Kecamatan Botomuzöi, Kabupaten Nias

Abstract

Famatörö Töi is a tradition of naming the first child in the Nias community that is passed down from generation to generation and contains cultural, social, and religious values. Previous studies generally discuss the practice of naming from the perspective of customary law, social identity, and social status, but studies on the Famatörö Töi tradition for the first child in the context of social change are still limited. The novelty of this research lies in the analysis of the symbolic meaning, implementation process, and changes in the Famatörö Töi tradition using George Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interactionism theory. This study aims to analyze the meaning, implementation, changes, and functions of the Famatörö Töi tradition in the lives of the Nias community in Botomuzöi District. The results show that Famatörö Töi is interpreted as a symbol of prayer, hope, respect for ancestors, and family identity. Its implementation includes family preparation (Mangowuloi Talifusö), name determination, naming procession, and expression of gratitude. Despite changes due to modernization, education, economic conditions, technological developments, and religion, this tradition remains intact and plays a role in strengthening kinship ties and strengthening the community's socio-religious identity. The method used was descriptive qualitative research, with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
