Kekudusan Hidup dan Kematian yang Bermartabat: Fondasi Etika Perjanjian Baru bagi Perawatan Paliatif Kontemporer

Advancements in modern medical technology have generated profound ethical dilemmas regarding euthanasia and assisted suicide in end-of-life care. Although palliative care has emerged as a more humane approach, it remains vulnerable to utilitarian principles that prioritize patient autonomy and quality of life over the sanctity of life. This study examines the New Testament ethical foundations of the sanctity of life and dignified death as a theological basis for contemporary palliative care practice.
Employing a qualitative-hermeneutical, normative, and interdisciplinary approach, this research conducts an exegetical analysis of key New Testament texts: Romans 14:7-9, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Colossians 3:3-4, Philippians 1:21-24, Romans 8:18-25, and 2 Corinthians 5:1-10. The findings demonstrate that the sanctity of life is absolute because human life belongs entirely to God. Furthermore, dignified death in the New Testament is understood not as death without suffering, but as death faced with faith, submission to God, hope of resurrection, and divine glory.
This study concludes that New Testament ethics fully supports holistic palliative care that alleviates suffering without hastening death, while firmly rejecting active euthanasia and utilitarian approaches. The findings offer significant contributions toward developing an integrity-based end-of-life care model in Indonesia through meaningful collaboration between medical practice and spiritual ministry.
