Abstract

The phenomenon of apostasy, or conversion from Islam to another belief system, has increasingly attracted attention in Indonesia, including in Kaimbulawa Village, Siompu District, South Buton Regency. Data from the Ministry of Religious Affairs indicate a rise in apostasy cases nationally, while at the local level Kaimbulawa Village has also experienced a similar trend, raising social concerns. This study aims to analyze community perceptions of apostasy, identify its causal factors, and examine the social impacts it generates. The research employed a qualitative approach using interviews, observations, and documentation involving religious leaders, community figures, youth, and the general public. Findings reveal that community perceptions of apostasy are predominantly negative, characterized by rejection and social stigma toward those involved. Contributing factors include limited religious understanding, economic conditions, family conflicts, and social environment influences. The social impacts observed include disharmony within families, weakened social cohesion, and heightened religious sensitivity within the community. The study concludes that moderate, inclusive, and contextually grounded religious guidance is necessary to help communities respond to apostasy more wisely while maintaining social harmony.
