Abstract

Daidzein is a soy-derived isoflavone that has been widely investigated as a potential non-hormonal alternative for preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. This literature review aims to analyze the effects of daidzein supplementation on bone health based on findings from various studies. The reviewed evidence indicates that most studies have reported improvements in Bone Mineral Density (BMD), particularly in the lumbar spine, as well as favorable changes in bone remodeling biomarkers. Isoflavone supplementation has been associated with increased levels of bone formation markers, such as osteocalcin and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), and decreased levels of bone resorption markers, such as C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), suggesting a potential osteoprotective effect. However, the findings remain inconsistent. Some studies have reported no statistically significant effects, potentially due to variations in dosage, intervention duration, and individual metabolic status. Limitations related to sample size, measurement methods, and population heterogeneity further restrict the generalizability of the findings. Overall, daidzein and soy isoflavones show potential as complementary agents for maintaining bone health in postmenopausal women. Nevertheless, further standardized, long-term studies are needed to establish their clinical efficacy and safety.
