Abstract

Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors, with an increasing prevalence, and may cause degenerative changes in the vitreous body that trigger the occurrence of floaters or myodesopsia. This condition has the potential to impair visual function and quality of life, particularly in patients with high myopia who are at greater risk of experiencing earlier vitreous changes. This study aimed to determine the incidence of floaters among patients with myopia at Dr. YAP Eye Hospital Yogyakarta in 2025. This study employed a quantitative descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all myopic patients recorded in the medical records of Dr. YAP Eye Hospital Yogyakarta during 2025. A total of 100 patients were selected as the sample using the Lemeshow formula and purposive sampling technique. The data used were secondary data obtained from medical records, including demographic characteristics, degree of myopia, and the occurrence of floaters. The data were analyzed using univariate descriptive analysis through frequency distributions and percentages. The results showed that among the 100 myopic patients studied, 28 patients experienced floaters. Floaters were more frequently found in patients aged <50 years, females, and those with high/severe myopia. Based on the risk factors, most cases of floaters had no identifiable cause. From an Islamic perspective, health is one of the great blessings bestowed by Allah SWT that must be preserved; therefore, maintaining physical health is a responsibility and is highly encouraged for every individual.
