Abstract

Effective interprofessional communication plays an important role in improving patient safety and reducing the risk of medication errors. Ineffective communication among healthcare professionals may increase the risk of errors during various phases of medication services, potentially endangering patients. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the effectiveness of Interprofessional Collaboration communication and the risk of medication errors in the Emergency Department of Islamic Hospital Banjarmasin. This study employed a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 60 patient prescriptions and 42 healthcare professionals selected using accidental sampling. The research instruments included an Interprofessional Collaboration communication observation checklist and a medication error observation checklist that had been modified and tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rho test. The results showed a significant relationship between Interprofessional Collaboration communication and the risk of medication errors in the prescribing phase (p=0.001; r=0.429) and transcribing phase (p=0.001; r=0.423). Meanwhile, no significant relationship was found in the dispensing phase (p=0.858; r=-0.024) and Administration phase (p=0.279; r=-0.142). Most Interprofessional Collaboration communication was categorized as less effective, and the risk of medication errors was identified in the prescribing and transcribing phases. The findings indicate that the effectiveness of Interprofessional Collaboration communication is associated with the risk of medication errors. Therefore, improving interprofessional communication is necessary to support patient safety.
