Abstract

Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It can affect children’s cognitive and executive function. ADHD management generally involves pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Non-pharmacological approaches such as aerobic exercise and exergaming are gaining increasing attention as promising alternative interventions. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of aerobic exercise and exergaming in improving cognitive abilities in children with ADHD. Methods: This study employed a literature review design using the PICO approach. Articles were searched for on Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and PLOS One, covering publications from 2016 to 2026. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria consisted of RCTs or experimental studies involving children under 18 years of age diagnosed with ADHD; from these articles meeting the inclusion criteria, 9 were selected for further analysis. Conclusion:  Eight of the nine studies that were further examined reported significant improvements following the intervention. Aerobic exercise was found to improve executive function and working memory, while exergaming interventions showed broader and more consistent effects because it combines physical and cognitive stimulation simultaneously. Aerobic exercise also remains relevant as an affordable and easily accessible intervention. A combination of the two has the potential to provide the most comprehensive benefits for children with ADHD.
