Abstract

This study aimed to analyze differences in wound healing dynamics after hirudotherapy between wounds treated with topical turmeric ointment and untreated wounds using a paired within-subject design. A total of 10 subjects were included, with each subject receiving two treatments: turmeric ointment (intervention) on one side and no treatment (control) on the contralateral side. Wound area was measured daily from day 0 to day 15 and analyzed using Area Under Curve (AUC), time to 50% wound reduction (t50), healing rate, and total reduction. The results showed that the mean AUC in the intervention group (456.33 ± 125.82) was lower than the control group (562.84 ± 229.40), although the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.066). Similarly, t50 tended to be shorter in the intervention group (4.12 ± 1.53 days) compared to control (5.71 ± 2.70 days), but without statistical significance (p = 0.078). However, significant differences were observed in healing rate (p = 0.007) and total wound reduction (p = 0.010), with higher values in the intervention group. Although turmeric ointment did not significantly affect cumulative and endpoint healing parameters, it demonstrated significant effects on dynamic wound healing processes, suggesting its potential role as an adjuvant therapy.
