Abstract

Home gardens can serve as productive spaces for household food production, but their utilization is often constrained by limited space, technical knowledge, and access to appropriate cultivation technologies. This community service activity aimed to introduce a simple integrated food production model based on aquaponics as an alternative approach to utilizing home gardens in Bube Baru Village, Bone Bolango Regency. The activity applied a participatory approach consisting of initial identification, community introduction, demonstration, hands-on installation, mentoring, and reflection on program sustainability. The introduced system integrated Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) using buckets, a water pump, PVC pipes, one liter recycled mineral-water bottles, and plastic cups. The activity resulted in a simple aquaponic model that can serve as a demonstration of utilizing limited spaces for integrated fish and vegetable production. The activity also provided participants with practical experience in understanding the relationships among fish, water, nutrients, plants, and water circulation. The model has potential to be gradually replicated as an alternative for diversifying household food production. Further development requires regular maintenance, water-quality management, appropriate fish feeding, and monitoring of fish and plant growth.
